St. John the Baptist Church, Thane.

Principal Architect: Vikas Dilawari Conservation Architect.

Project Year: 2011.

This 16th-century church is significant from art-historical point of view. The church was originally called the Friary de San Antonio (Church of St. Anthony) and was constructed in c. 1582 A.D. As per Vikas Dilawari; it can claim to be older than the Taj Mahal (c 1630 AD). The church was built in Baroque style which was characteristic Portuguese built churches in India during this era.

While carrying out survey and defect mapping, layers of history was discovered along-with historical artifacts. The interventions aimed at a sensitive approach to retain the historicity of the church while incorporating services for modern-day needs.
